It’s no secret that I am a huge Robert Rodriguez fan. The man is an inspiration to wannabe filmmakers around the globe. Beginning with 1992’s El Mariachi, Rodriguez is known for making big-time films outside the Hollywood machine on small-time budgets. His little $7000 film (which he financed by selling his body to science), got him recognized at Sundance and bought by Columbia Pictures who didn’t change a frame. Today he still works outside of Tinseltown in his own studio (in his house) and alternates between child-fare with the Spy Kids trilogy (two of which grossed over $100 million in the States, tripling their budget) and over-the-top actioneers like Desperado and Once Upon A Time in Mexico. Talk about two sides of the spectrum! Now don’t get me wrong, his R-rated movies are entertaining and I own most, but with Sin City, Rodriguez has really stepped up and shown what he is truly capable of with the right material.

Sin City is an amazing film to look at! It’s a black and white noir flick with dashes of color for emphasis. The style is a perfect fit for Rodriguez, a huge backer of digital filmmaking. You are experiencing the world of a comic book and the cast and crew sell it in full, not the easiest thing to do in an all green-screen production (right George Lucas?). Really for the first time ever you can feel the preparation and commitment on- and off-screen to match the look and feel of the source material and its characters. Bringing creator Frank Miller along as co-director was a great idea (Quentin Tarantino even joins in the fun for a hilarious dialogue scene between Owen and Del Toro).

I loved the cast (Rourke, Dawson, and Owen were my personal favorites) who breathed life into these half-naked, bullet-ridden, and bloody creatures. Make no mistake, Sin City is an extremely violent film. I cannot recommend the film to underagers and those that aren’t fans of violence, trust me here, there’s a LOT to stomach (the film probably only avoided an NC-17 or Unrated rating because of its over-the-top style). Regardless, this is my favorite movie of the year at this point, can’t wait for the DVD!

I saw this film at Cinemark’s Tinseltown 17 Theatres on Peach Street in Erie, PA.
