| After
deciding to split Kill Bill into two volumes instead of editing it
down to usual feature length (surely nothing to do with making more money) and
then delaying the release of its conclusion, I am happy to report that the second
half holds up as well, if not better, than the bloody first half. Quentin Tarantino
is in love with Uma Thurman, there is no denying it. Uma is at her best here,
and looks her absolute best. What actress wouldn’t love to play this part?!
Thanks to the Q and T tag team the simple premise is delivered brilliantly -
whether blushing in her wedding dress or gouging out someone’s eyeball,
you gotta love The Bride (Thurman)!
Kill Bill is your basic revenge tale and the plot in this half is (of course) the same as its predecessor. If you haven’t read my thoughts on Kill Bill: Vol. 1, have a look here. Thankfully, one welcome difference in Vol. 2 is that we get more background on Kiddo, AKA The Bride, AKA Black Mamba. If there was just more of the same this time around, sure it would still be a great film, but showing The Bride’s training and the events that lead up to the Massacre at Two Pines makes this film complete in and of itself. Volume 2 is less over-the-top violence and more dialogue and story driven. I wasn’t expecting this but again it’s a welcome choice. By giving us the back-story on The Bride and especially her humorous training with the beard twisting Pai Mei and her relationship with Bill (Carradine), her character is now fully developed and more human. Don’t get me wrong, there are still some great action pieces here, and they are rough and violent, but you won’t see Uma hacking and slashing through 88 bodyguards this time. Now we wait again for the ultimate DVD release of both volumes - unedited. I saw this film at Cinemark’s Tinseltown 17 Theater on Peach Street in Erie, PA.
