Fans have been begging for it since Jim Carrey went serious, and now their wait is over, as he returns to his comedic roots. What better way to go about your big return to mainstream comedy than to re-team with the Farrelly brothers, who are still riding high from the success of There's Something About Mary. The results are good, but almost sub-par in comparison to the brothers' past films. I will first tell you that when Dumb & Dumber came out in theaters I must have seen it at least two or three times before owning it on video. When I had it on video I, like every other college student I knew, watched it almost religiously each week. When There's Something About Mary came out, I went through the same cycle. For whatever the various reasons, these films are hilarious to people of my age bracket (18-24), and that is probably why my parents think these movies are utterly stupid. Me, Myself & Irene falls right into the same category as these two films, but for some reason when the end credits began to roll, I just didn't have the same aftertaste. This movie has some extremely hilarious moments and many "hair gel"-like gross-out scenes too. Jim Carrey is really an amazing over-the-top entertainer; the guy seems to have an endless supply of energy. When the Farrelly brothers write a film, they write it for guys like Carrey: guys who are goofy as hell and make you laugh your ass off until you get tears in your eyes. Scenes I will only refer to as: "hair gel", "laxative date night", and "prom nightmare" are classics in gross-out comedy. To this list we can now add "dry mouth", "morning pee", and "time with the kids" thanks to "Me, Myself & Irene." I am sure I will own this movie too when it is released to DVD, but in the end the jokes just don't have the same punch as its predecessors. Though I will say, if you liked any of these guys' movies, chances are this one will also give you some good laughs. What I liked: Jim Carrey's return. His character's unique family. Some really hilarious moments making it worth the price of admission. What I didn't like: A few too many gross-out jokes. (John C. Lyons, Film Critic) |
