> 2001: THE YEAR IN MOVIES
Film Critic John C. Lyons wraps up the year in pictures.

It is that time of year again! Here are my little lists of the people and films that I would recognize this past year if I gave out the awards. Soon I will be posting my reactions to this year's Oscar nominees.

Memento

THE GREATS
Memento
Moulin Rouge
Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring
A.I. Artificial Intelligence
Ocean's 11
Black Hawk Down
Mulholland Drive

THE STANDOUT EFFORTS
Nicole Kidman (actor Moulin Rouge and The Others)
*Nicole should easily get the Best Actress of the Year award

Christopher and Jonathon Nolan (Chris and Jon wrote, and Chris directed Memento)
*they easily made the most original film of the year, if you haven't seen it yet, please take the time, you'll thank yourself

New Line Cinema (Production Company) and Peter Jackson (Director) of Lord of the Rings
*who took the biggest financial risk in movie history, and came out winners

Ridley Scott (Director) and Slavomir Idziak (cinematography) of Black Hawk Down
*the creators of the gritty realism of street war

David Lynch (Director), Naomi Watts and Laura Herring (actors) of Mulholland Drive
*the biggest mind f-ck of the year, I'm still thinking about this one, great work all-around

Steven Spielberg (Director)
*who finally brought the vision that he and Stanley Kubrick created together for A.I. Artificial Intelligence

Steven Soderberg (director) and the cast of Ocean's 11
*the most entertaining film of the year

THE WASTES
The One
Behind Enemy Lines
Original Sin
The Royal Tenebaums

Some people probably loved these films. I hated them. If you are on the fence about spending the cash on renting one of these, maybe you should look elsewhere.

THE ONES THAT GOT AWAY!
Amelie
A Beautiful Mind
In the Bedroom
Gosford Park

I wanted to see these movies. At this point I either have not had the opportunity (Amelie) or the time (A Beautiful Mind). Hopefully you will see reviews for these here in the near future.
